Baptism

There is nothing more that St Margaret’s likes than to baptise member of our community into the faith of the Church. As your parish church we consider it a privilege to be able to welcome all members of our community into church to mark significant events of life and rites of passage. Baptism is a reminder of the love that God has for all God’s children and allows us an opportunity as a community to share the joy of coming to faith and the gift of children and to thank God at the start of their lives. At St Margaret’s we recognise that this is a really important occasion for your family and look forward to helping you celebrate in a way that reflects the individuality of every person and family, in the context of our community here.

Following our established practice, baptisms take place within the context of the main Sunday Eucharist at 10am, as it is both the reception of the faith and the entering into the community of the church. We only baptise members of one family at any service. We would like to encourage you to make this a family celebration so if you would like to sponsor flowers, music or a reception after the service we would be delighted to talk further about this.

The diocese of Southwark also hold regular services of Confirmation. In these services we confirm the baptism we have received as a child with our voices and prayers. This is a significant step forward in faith and a bishop from the diocese takes the service. We look to hold this regularly at St Margaret’s (the last time was November 2019), but there also opportunities to join other churches or attend the cathedral. If you are interested in confirmation for yourself or your child please speak to the vicar.
